 Learn about the rich history of Gullah art with internationally acclaimed cultural heritage artist Sonja Griffin Evans, a Beaufort native whose vibrant mixed-media works celebrate the beauty, spirituality, and authenticity of the Gullah Sea Islands and African American culture. A self-taught artist, Evans blends color, texture, and storytelling to honor her heritage and faith. Don’t miss this opportunity to hear her share her creative journey and the inspiration behind her celebrated works.

Beginner Metal Clay Workshop with Janet Berkeley


Curious about metal clay but not sure where to start? This beginner-friendly class is the perfect introduction! You’ll learn the basics of working with metal clay — from shaping, texturing, and refining your design to firing and polishing your finished piece.

No experience is necessary — just bring your creativity and curiosity! You’ll leave with a beautiful piece of jewelry (or small sculptural work) and the confidence to continue exploring this exciting medium on your own.

All materials and tools provided

Demonstrations include rolling, cutting, texturing, and torch or kiln firing

Plein Air Paint Out

Pack your paints, pastel, pencils and your picnic! We’re heading to the hauntingly beautiful Old Sheldon Church Ruins for a spring plein air paint-out. Moss-draped oaks, weathered brick arches, and dappled Lowcountry light—yes, please.

Schedule of the Day:

  • 8:30 AM – Caravan leaves Fripp from the Community Center
  • 9:30 AM – Arrive, and  set up your spot
  • 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM – Paint, sketch, photograph, or simply soak it all in
  • 12:15 PM – Potluck picnic (bring a dish to share + your own drink/utensils)
  • 1:00 – 1:30 PM – Optional show-and-tell & friendly feedback circle
    1:45 – Head back to Fripp
    3:00 – Arrive at Community Center

What to bring: art supplies, folding chair/easel, sunscreen/bug spray, water, hat, camera, and a potluck dish.

Weather plan: If storms surprise us, we’ll post an update by 7 AM on 4/18/2026.

IMPORTANT: RSVP by April 16th, 2026 so we know how many to plan for our event. Friends and curious onlookers are also welcome!

Join us for a wonderfully creative evening as Kathy Johnson, owner of Marsh Wiggle Knitting, leads an engaging session on Lowcountry Knitting. Kathy will share how our coastal climate influences yarn and fiber choices, how to select materials that perform beautifully in heat and humidity, and tips for ensuring your knitting projects succeed in the Lowcountry environment.
To make the evening even more festive, we’ll enjoy Cinco de Mayo–inspired refreshments while we learn, mingle, and get inspired.

Discover the endless possibilities of landscape painting in this creative, hands-on workshop led by award-winning and widely collected pastel artist Beth Williams. Participants will explore how composition, color harmony, and textural techniques can transform a single landscape into a variety of expressive interpretations. Learn how to layer, simplify, and experiment to achieve mood and movement in your work while discovering the luminous depth and richness of pastel.

Join accomplished Lowcountry artist Mary Segars for an in-depth exploration of landscape painting in oils. Designed for intermediate to advanced painters, this workshop focuses on refining your skills in composition, color harmony, and texture to create expressive, cohesive landscapes. Mary will demonstrate advanced techniques for building depth, capturing light, and bringing emotion and movement to your work, while providing individualized guidance to help you strengthen your personal style.
